Cross-Platform Initiative
to Prevent Harm
As a cross-platform initiative, Thrive brings platforms together to prevent suicide and self-harm online.
A Collective Effort to Prevent Suicide and Self Harm Across Platforms
Our primary goal is to reduce harm online by helping platforms work together. We believe that suicide and self-harm content should never go viral, and that tech companies have a shared responsibility to stop it. Thrive creates a space for action — with privacy, respect, and urgency at its core.
By enabling the secure sharing of privacy-protected signals, Thrive helps platforms respond faster and more effectively to high-risk content.
Thrive’s Journey: Purpose, Vision, and Impact
Suicide and self-harm are deeply complex mental health issues that can have devastating consequences. For several years many technology companies worked with experts to develop an informed and thoughtful approach to suicide and self-harm content. However, sharing information across the technology industry happens in very limited situations.
Meta developed technology that would allow companies to both upload and download signals that represented potential harms. These applications were used in other forms (for example child safety, counter terrorism), but not for suicide and self-harm content.
The mission of Thrive is to use collaboration, information sharing and technology solutions to prevent suicide and self-harm, and provide supportive resources, globally.
To be the global leader in suicide and self-harm prevention and innovation through scalable solutions.

In 2022 representatives from Meta began conversations with Dr. Dan Reidenberg, a global mental health and suicide prevention expert, around the goal of using existing technology to create a cross-industry program for SSH content. Over several months, they jointly built a plan for launching the new initiative and in the

spring of 2023, Dr. Reidenberg brought the program to The Mental Health Coalition where he would function as the Director of Thrive. By the summer of 2023 Meta, Snap and Tik Tok agreed to be the founding members of Thrive and on September 12, 2024 Thrive was publicly announced. Soon after the launch, Discord, Patreon, Pinterest and X joined Thrive doubling its membership.
Through Thrive, participating tech companies will be able to share signals about violating suicide or self-harm content so that other companies can investigate and take action if the same or similar content is being shared on their platforms. Meta has provided the technical infrastructure that underpins Thrive – the same technology used by the Tech Coalition’s Lantern program – which enables signals to be shared securely.
Participating companies will start by sharing hashes – numerical codes that correspond to violating content – of images and videos showing graphic suicide and self-harm, and of content depicting or encouraging viral suicide or self-harm challenges. We’re prioritizing this content because of its propensity to spread across different platforms quickly. These signals represent content only and do not include any personally identifiable information about any accounts or individuals.

Why Cross-Platform Signal Sharing Saves Lives
Thrive helps platforms act faster and smarter—together. This cross-platform initiative reduces harm, improves internal systems, and shows the industry’s shared commitment to saving lives.
Minimize Harm
Early identification across systems helps reduce exposure and allows platforms to intervene before harmful content gains momentum. This proactive approach supports faster protection for at-risk users.
Improve Systems
As a cross-platform initiative, Thrive allows systems to operate independently while benefiting from shared signals—enhancing decision-making without compromising platform autonomy or user privacy.
Mitigate Risk
Thrive demonstrates that coordinated industry action can lead to stronger safety outcomes. By working together, platforms build collective trust and show public accountability in tackling harmful content.
